Ernst Karl Mayer, known more commonly as Erich Mayer, was born in Germany in 1876.  After two years of being confined to bed due to ill health, Mayer decided to move to South Africa for its climatical benefits.  After fighting in the boer war and being repatriated to Germany in 1902, he finally returned to South Africa in 1911.  Mayer was eager to learn as much as he possibly could about art, and travelled to many countries and studied under a variety of famous artists, including his good friend, Pierneef.  Erich Mayer is well known for his oil paintings that record life in South Africa during the first half of the 20th century.  Erich Mayer passed away in 1960, but still remains an intricate part of South Africa’s history.
